Dana West Jr.-Sr. High » Service Learning
"Graduates of the Port Byron Central School District will demonstrate awareness of society's needs, will work to better the community and will be productive and responsible in personal behavior." This is one of Port Byron's commencement goals developed by our District team several years ago. In order to implement this standard, the High School Design Team ( the shared decision making committee) suggested a service learning graduation requirement. This project was piloted for two years to access how students, parents and our community could help to fulfill the responsibilities implied by this standard. In our research, we discovered that industries support and encourage their employees to be involved in their communities through service clubs, social and athletic organizations. Many colleges require documented service work from the students prior to graduation. Beginning with the class of 2004, Port Byron students will be required to complete 40 hours of service learning to receive their Port Byron diploma. The 40 hours can be accomplished at ten hours per year, completed over a summer, or any combination. Service learning requires documenting activities for which no compensation is received, no school course credit is given, or that is not part of regular family responsibilities. Students have assisted elderly neighbors, helped with fund raising, folded newsletters, waited on tables, picked up trash, tutored, built floats, cared for stray animals, participated in fire/rescue services, helped with child care. We are always looking for mentors and suggestions to assist our students to successfully complete this requirement. If you have a project that our students could assist with or if you can mentor a young person and assist them in completing this requirement, please call the High School office at 776-5728.
